Unfortunately due to state governmental budgetary constraints we will be unable to add any further sites into the project at this time. Feel free to peruse the information as a matter of interest and check back on this site pending any changes in the situation.

Purple Loosestrife Biocontrol Project Volunteer Expression of Interest Form

Volunteering is part of the State project.
Volunteers are not required to participate in all three facets of the Biocontrol Project, however in order for AMWS to ensure that all stages are completely staffed, please indicate your level of interest.

Please indicate interest in blanks.
(1: no interest; 2: some interest; 3: definitely interested)

I. Propagation: _____

  • Must attend complete training course on how to rear Galerucella beetles and obtain loosestrife plants only from approved sites.
  • Notify AMWS of the site to be used for beetle rearing and the name(s) of those involved. If you do not have your own wetland for nomination, or if your wetland is not accepted into the Program, you may still raise the beetles.
  • A release site will be assigned to you in a location as convenient as possible.

*All equipment will be provided and remains the property of AMWS as well as the beetles and their offspring.

  • No sale of or otherwise distribution of the Galerucella beetles is authorized or allowed.
  • Ability to devote an hour daily to plant watering and rearing during the approximately 6-week rearing cycle in June-July.
  • Share your expertise, experiences with others (i.e. schools, other interested groups) in your area interested in developing a beetle rearing or purple loosestrife education program of their own. (optional, but strongly suggested)

II. Beetle Release: _____

  • Releases will only be done with the expressed authorization of AMWS/MWRP into previously approved wetland sites on the designated date(s).
  • Release data forms must be completed in full and returned to AMWS immediately following the release.
  • If you cannot or do not wish to continue in the program, AMWS must be notified immediately and all equipment must be returned to AMWS. You will be charged for any equipment not returned to AMWS.

III. Monitoring: _____

  • Must attend the field training session on Monitoring Protocol.
  • Commitment to evaluate the establishment and impact of the Galerucella beetles over a three-year period, twice a year. Spring and Fall evaluations require about one day each.

If you are unable to provide ongoing monitoring, it is your responsibility to notify AMWS so that a suitable substitute volunteer can be found for the release site to ensure the continuity of the program.

Optional, but strongly suggested:
